What operators say
Real results from independent restaurants using PlateMargin.
I cut my food cost from 34% to 28% in two months without touching my recipes. The plate costing analysis flagged three items that were total margin killers.
The competitor pricing tool saved me from a bad price increase. I was going to raise prices too aggressively on mains — the data showed my closest competitors hadn't moved.
As a solo operator I used to spend half a day rebuilding menus for seasonal changes. Now it takes 20 minutes. That time adds up across a year.
I was skeptical of AI tools after trying a few that were just generic advice dressed up as insights. PlateMargin gives me actual numbers tied to my specific ingredients.
Common questions
Do I need a POS integration to use PlateMargin?
No. PlateMargin supports three intake methods: photo upload (our AI extracts the menu), manual ingredient entry, or POS sync. Most operators start with photo upload or manual entry and add a POS connection later if they want automated daily updates. We currently support Toast, Square, and Lightspeed integrations, with Clover and ShopKeep in beta.
What data does PlateMargin use for competitor benchmarking?
Competitor pricing data comes from publicly available sources including restaurant websites, online menus, delivery platform listings (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub), and third-party review aggregators. We do not scrape private data or require competitor cooperation. Market coverage is strongest in metro and suburban areas; rural operators may see fewer comparable competitors in the dataset.
How accurate is the AI plate costing estimate?
The costing model uses ingredient-level pricing from a US national supplier database, adjusted for regional cost indices. For standard items, accuracy is typically within ±5% of actual food cost. Accuracy decreases for complex recipes, imported ingredients, or house-made components where ingredient weight and waste are variable. We recommend using AI costing as a baseline and adjusting for your specific supplier relationships.
Is my menu data secure?
PlateMargin is SOC 2 Type II compliant. Your menu data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256). We do not share your proprietary menu data with third parties or use it to train models that serve other customers. You can request full data deletion at any time via your account settings or by contacting support.
